The 5G-ENCODE project is a winner of DCMS Industrial 5G Testbeds & Trials competition as part of the UK Government’s investment to trial new 5G services and applications in the vertical industry sectors of manufacturing and logistics. he aim of these projects is to demonstrate the value of 5G, beyond enhanced mobile broadband, by targeting industrial uses that can help deliver efficiency, productivity, and other benefits in the UK economy, and help the UK lead the development of enterprise applications for 5G. This is part of a larger 5G Testbeds & Trials Programme announced in September 2018

The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) is made up of three of the councils in the region – Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. WECA also supports the Local Enterprise Partnership, which is business-led, and covers the four West of England councils, including North Somerset Council. Together, they deliver economic growth for the region and address some of the region’s challenges, such as productivity and skills, housing and transport. For the 5G-ENCODE project WECA provides funding to the DETI project of which 5G-ENCODE is an important element.

Project Partners:
Zeetta Networks, is a UK technology company, offering software tools that simplify network operations and improve the efficiency of a network with intelligence and automation. Zeetta is the project leader of the 5G-ENCODE project and its main technology provider and system integrator. For the 5G-ENCODE project Zeetta will be contributing its multi-domain orchestration technology based on 5G network splicing™ and slicing. Network slicing is the ability to provision prioritised, partitioned and protected sub-networks to ensure that business and time-critical systems can run over shared infrastructure without interference. Network splicing™ is a unique concept developed by Zeetta that allows network slices to be joined in sequence to extend reach for the provision of a continuous service. These technologies will play an important role in manufacturing applications, particularly where assets must be tracked across multiple sites, geographic locations and indoor and outdoor environments. The project will prove that this capability is an essential enabler for the wider adoption of 5G in the industrial sector.
The National Composites Centre (NCC) is a world-class research centre, where companies of any size and across industry sectors can access cutting-edge technology and specialist engineers, to drive innovation in the design and manufacture of composites. NCC is one of seven centres that form the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC). It works globally to accelerate the adoption of high-value, sustainable engineering solutions in composites by providing products and services to the UK’s aviation, automotive, renewable energy and other high-tech industries. For the 5G-ENCODE project, the NCC will host the UK’s strategic 5G testbed and demonstration facility for industrial technologies. NCC will commission and manage infrastructure for this pioneering capability, coordinating industrial use cases. Running in parallel is the Digital Engineering Technology & Innovation (DETI) programme which will develop tools, technologies and processes for smart manufacturing and design, underpinned by the 5G-ENCODE network.
